EL ROSARIO FARM These lands were traditionally used for livestock and later became Luker Chocolate's first cocoa forest and the largest cultivation of Fino de Aroma varieties in the country designed under an agroforestry system, allowing it to be home to different species of birds and animals.
Thanks to the change in land use (cattle ranching for cocoa), the number of sustainable jobs increased from 5 to 267, from less than 2 trees per hectare to 600,000 new trees.
This has generated a high economic, social and environmental impact on the communities surrounding the crop.

NEW TREES In 2010, Luker Chocolate found 550 hectares of land used for cattle farming in Necoclí. One by one, 600,000 cacao trees were planted turning this land into largest agro-productive plantation of varieties of Cacao Fino de Aroma in the Colombia. NEW HOPE Today El Rosario Estate provides employment for over 267 people (compared to only 5 before) leading to a meaningful economic, social and environmental impact among the neighbouring communities. Farmers not only have a better standard of living, they also have renewed hope for their children, something that was absent for a long time. NEW HOME 139 (and counting) exotic bird species have returned to a new vibrant home, a new dense cocoa forest. And more mammals are coming back too, reclaiming their habitat. NEW WAYS The reintroduction of cacao has allowed men to work in proximity of their homes instead of traveling far in search of casual manual work. It has also empowered women to work with cacao, in the plantation or the nursery where beans are planted and young trees cared for and grafted till they are strong enough to be planted. NEW SKILLS On top of agricultural skills that are critical to growing fine cacao, the re-development of the community has fostered and encouraged entrepreneurship to supplement income with, for example, stunning arts and crafts including the paintings by a local artist used on our bar packaging.
